If I had the guide to do that. I'd be buying a new FT for my SC and using my old chassis to begin this project in a heartbeat.

That's very cool, but I don't see how he could shorten the chassis and still use the belt drive.

It says he "modifed" the chassis, it does not say anything about "shortening" it.

It does look like he's shortened the centre piece and there are plenty of other cars out there using belts of all different lengths.
I actually considered shortening the centre of my spares car to make an offroader/crawler.

You should be able to very slightly rock the gears back and forth between the spur and the pinion.....an old-school way is to stick a piece of paper between the gears, set it reasonably tight, and then pull the paper out.....but after setting the mesh enough times you can just feel it....Good Luck....

Should feel a little play between the gears , space between the pinion & spur is about 3 pieces of paper thick ...

one thing I do that helps is have one of the motor screws almost snug. Just enough that I can move the motor to set the mesh. I then hold it still as I tighten down that screw since the mesh can move when tightening the gear. It works well.

One thing I saw on another vehicle that I thought was pretty useful was on the duratrax DRX8E or whatever its called, you basically have these notches I think where you can set the mesh by the predetermined grooves or whatever. Basically, takes out the guess work of is this the right mesh.

I am wanting to buy my first 4WD SCT. I currently have a SC10 2wd, and interested in moving up. I am fairly new to RC, but am enjoying it. My question is, should I buy the SC10 4WD Short Course Truck (Pro Comp) ready to run kit..or buy the 4WD kit??

Hopefully I posted this in the right location...sorry for the newbie question!

Thanks!

Buy a losi... lol. The sc10 4x4 can be a good truck, but it is a lot of work. If you are new the losi might be better. Also, AE is releasing a Prolite 4x4 soon. No idea if it will be good, but if your are willing to wait...

Nothing wrong with the question. If people don't like to give an answer, just don't post.

Anyway, the first thing I would do is identify your track conditions. Reason I say this is that depending on those conditions, there may be things you will want to purchase right away for your SC10 4x4 (assuming you go that route) before getting it and assembling it. And with the SC10 4x4, assembly is a bit more involved than other 4wd SCTs since it is not based on a 1/8 buggy platform or similar like say a Losi SCTE.

Now, with that out of the way, thing about why you are wanting a RTR versus a kit? Is it the cost of electronics? I would suggest you look at what is ran at your track in that class, and see if anyone is able to be successful against the competition with the RTR gear. If everyone is running Pro4 4600s, RX8 ESCs and similar, etc. on a wide open track, you may find the speed you need to be competitive is lacking. If its a small to medium size track, you may be find with that gear. Though, I would suggest getting a good servo regardless. From what I have seen of the RTR SC104x4, that was the only thing that kind of stood out as really lacking on the small to medium tracks here electronics wise.

Next, are you opposed to buying used versus new? I saw this because the SC104x4's are unfortunately pretty prevalent on the boards to get used, loaded with upgrades, cheap. Just the nature of the beast as the SC10 4x4 does not have a good reputation with people who run on large 1/8 tracks in low traction conditions, in general (there are some who have had success, but its probably the one thing asked about most, setup advice in these conditions).

Once you have done all that, you should be prepared to make your decision if you buy new or used. Based on the quality of the parts and all, I wouldn't be opposed to buying a lightly used SC10 4x4 Factory Team or one with the important upgrades for your conditions and just tearing it down and rebuilding it.

Me personally I like the vehicle even with all its quirks. Just needs more of an effort put into it on the conditions we have issues with from the AE top team drivers in my opinion. Some others on the board feel its perfect as is (though, they felt that way when before the VTS slipper then too, and probably before the swaybars, and probably before ... you get my drift )

one thing I will say about the Prolite without first hand seeing it, but based on the specs of it, it appears its dimensions would put it beyond the limitations of ROAR. Now, that may not matter to the OP for his track, but its worth considering if you have to pass "the box". And for the price it is listing for, about $50 cheaper RTR to RTR versus the SC104x4 which can be had with the free thrown in upgrade kit, makes me wonder how much of a deal it really is in comparison, even with the SC10 4x4 quirks.

Plus, you will get race setup advice on the SC10 4x4 from the team it appears based on what Rick said as far as the target audience for each vehicle. Unless they plan to run with the Prolite from a racing perspective.

Just my opinions on what I am seeing from various posts.
