I ran an RB5 SP2 for the first time in many months yesterday. I picked up off this forum for cheap and installed a few option parts I had from my old RB5 like the BB shocks, aluminium hexes, and the aluminum axles as battery posts.

I was trying some new ideas I had after driving a 22 for awhile. It seems my ideas were on the right path. Even with a 17.5 with virtually no timing advance(compared to a Tekin RS or SXX Stock Spec) in the ESC(SXX Comp profile 9), my fastest lap was within 0.2 sec of my 13.5 boosted TLR 22 fastest lap. I was quite pleased. It was like an old friend you had not seen in awhile.

I won't part with my 22 anytime soon but it will be fun to see what the RB5 can do with equal power now that I have an idea of where to go with it.

Also, I missed how easy it is to work on the RB5. The 22 can be a bitch sometimes to work on.

Nothing to be shy about at all.

After driving the 22 and seeing how soft the shock setups were, I had the thought that maybe I had the RB5 too stiff. I had been blindly following the Tebo setup and it was not working. So, I softened up the BB shocks. I went to 30wt Losi oil in the front with a #56 Losi Piston and pink spring for the front. I went 25wt Losi oil in the back with a #56 Losi piston and the red springs. I also ran Losi tires instead of the JConcepts tires I had been running. I don't know how much of a difference the tires made. I don't have any JConcepts tires mounted for the RB5 to try a comparison.

I had foolishly forgotten that even with the standard shocks that I had run 2C pistons and lighter oils than Tebo.

Yeah, we use tebo's setup as a base, then go softer also, being we run on low/med bite, then try and dial out a little steering.

Yeah, I just had blinders on and could not see the solution. It took me changing cars for me to figure it out. The car was not perfect but it was about 90% of the way there.

I have not decided if I want to try the "arm mod" yet or not. I was pretty happy with the car at the normal wheel base. I had the front hubs back and the rear hubs in the middle.

the losi pistons are 4 hole? and is everybody still gluing one hole closed? local guy at the track mentioned he used them and it felt much better on the track compared to the standard setup.

Yes, the Losi pistons are 4 hole. I am using the #56's because the #55's I have were in use in my 22.

use all 4 holes on the losi pistons. I think they where glueing the hole shut on the kyosho 5 hole pistons makeing them 4 hole.

Right.

This will get you all the Losi pistons sizes. The #55 is the smallest and they go up to #57 I think.

That was me, run them with the 4 holes, you will notice a diffrence using them over the 5 hole. I just got the white springs i am going to try this weekend. I hope that i am better this weekend than last, i think i hit everything at the track but the scoring booth bad race day for me.
