ASERS (American Scale Endurance Racing Series)
We are pleased to announce ASERS, the American Scale Endurance Racing Series. A simple overview is available in .pdf form attached below. This is the beginning of a new form of racing that is geared from today's knife-edge precision to yesterday's simple and durable technology. ASERS events provide team racing, classes for different types of cars in one race, and an easy set of rules for the sanctioning of your event. From the unlimited P1 of anything goes under the P1 approved shell to the one-make class of GT2. Races hold 20 car grids and start at 2 hours 45 minutes (the shortest race length) and go to 4, 6, 12, and the grandfather of all tests 24 hours.
Anyone who has raced in an endurance event knows that a trouble-free finish is the major obstacle and a well-balanced attack of speed, power, and durability is the real challenge. Sure, someone may have an advantage but they still have to run trouble free laps and that pace won't show in qualifying only in the real race. Motors blow up, wheels come off, tires can wear out, parts break, electronics can fail... all things you must anticipate in order to finish just like real racing. Teams must work together to engineer their car, put in their stints of driving, and share the challenge of keeping their cars running and fight attrition. So put away the thick rule book and start to enjoy racing with simple rules, easy to tech, multi-class races with non-stop action from start to finish. Being apart of a racing team is scale racing. At the top of 1/1 scale racing no one races alone and r/c shouldn't be any different.
Aside from the engineering challenge your driving skills will be put to the maximum test. From driving well in traffic, to the art of passing and being passed, will happen non-stop during the entire event. Trust us, all hell will break loose for the first 5 minutes until it dawns on you that the entire race isn't about fighting over this one corner. You'll have those incredible racing moments that you relish many times over during the course of a race. Your concentration will be challenged as you do your best to put in good lap after lap. ASERS races are a blast and you'll achieve a level of satisfaction unknown in your racing life.
The time has come to make racing fun again. Challenge yourself by budget or no budget racing or by running brushed against brushless. Race against the best or run at a pace your team can manage. Strategy becomes your best friend. Try to win your class of P1, P2, GT1, or GT2 or try to win the overall victory. ASERS is what you've dreamed of racing to be... scale looks, team events, using cutting-edge technology, scale races and tracks that challenge you beyond the simple sprint race. Break the mold of racing as an individual to the thrill of team racing, of being a part of something bigger than yourself.
You read about the dissapointed racers all over web and ASERS is just one way to remedy how you feel about racing forever and put burnout in the closet and not your favorite toys.
Talk to your race director about holding an ASERS race today.

What a great idea! My only comment is I'd love to see a more controlled 4wd class. The 190mm 2WD 540 can class looks great, but honestly I don't know of too many racers who actually have these cars anymore, but I know a ton of people who have 4WD TC's that they could run in a similiar class, very controlled, very low point of entry...

One other note, I don't see anything in the rules about cells, either number of them or capacity limitations, or type...I know the idea is not to over regulate the classes, but this is something you might want to think about adding, to at least the lower of the two classes...

Thanks TigeRyan. I'll do my best to answer each question.
We would like to see each event to take on its own personality. Everyone here who has been racing is used to a thick guidebook and someone looking over their shoulder to tell them what to do. And ASERS will help open up the rules so choices fall on the teams. Your instincts to take the regulations and apply what makes sense to get participation is right. And ASERS will help open up the rules so choices fall on the teams. For example, if you have a large 19T 4WD TC class where you race you should make that the GT1 class. Put a weight limit so those who put their money into Lipo's can use them but have to pull the same car as anyone else in the class. We ran a 4 hour and a 2h 45m race this year. We noticed that being the fastest or have the latest and greatest 4WD didn't automatically guarantee the results. In each event the fastest car didn't win. Probably just pushing the envelope a little too wide open. In fact had it not been for a broken chassis an old HPI RS4 with gear differentials might have won the 4 hour race. This last event had a Tamiya TA05 in the lead and should have won had it not been for some late careless driving. Once you run an event like this you'll start to notice that heavy-handed regulations do not make the difference you are familiar with in sprint racing. A solid 19T can beat a brushless 4WD if the overall pace is there. And like in our last event of 2h 45m 3 2WD 540 GT2 cars won the overall podium even though they were .7 to 1.5 seconds a lap slower.
Good question. We don't have the Tecnical and Sporting regulations finished but they are close. Basically, the series allows for hobby distributed batteries. Lipo is the future and anyone ready to take the plunge should be allowed to use them. Their cars will carry ballast to offset the difference to NiMH cars and that is fair. NiMH is nearing the same capacity as Lipo. But you need enough batteries to race for a long time. I for one will use $30 packs until the jump to Lipo makes sense. I just spent $300 on a new charger and batteries last season and the timing isn't right for my running budget. I ran with my teammate very well and had it not been for a blown motor and 11 minutes in the pits we might have challenged for the win. It really doesn't matter about who races with what because the number of challenges to overcome outweigh the finer details.
This type of racing is a blast and everyone should try it once. Over-anaylizing is easy to do in r/c racing. We've done it over and over again trying to find balance in our races. We've come to the solid conclusion that you open up the choices for your racers. GT2 has restrictions for those want them. It's easy to take your group and tell them a certain motor type or control tire and call it GT2. The main thing is to open it up and let the teams engineer and strategize their race without a heavy hand. You'll see more smiles than you would at any sprint race. I guarantee it.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, very well thought out answers...
I have a fair amount of experience with endurance races as we have run 2 1/18th micro endurance races, a 500 laps and a 1000 lap race in the last couple of years and you are correct, rarely does the fastest car win.
I'd like to discus with you more about what we need to do at one of my local tracks to host an event, I was talking to the RD this evening and he is interested in doing it...

There is a possibility of ASERS and Miller Motorsports Park running an endurance event in conjunction with ALMS in May as a side show. More details as discussions continue.
This will be a full field event since we will be a side-show. The talk is that we will be close to the event so mechanics, drivers, etc.. can come and watch. Or even possibly take the controls... now that would be cool.

We are going to impose that the wheels may not exceed the side vertical plane of the bodies or 190mm total. Realism is heavily encouraged obviously. All tamiya decals have a part number and can be ordered through a hobby shop. A Photoshop file is available so you can make your own numbers for the event.
Any body suggestions or missing manufacturers of 190mm bodies for GT1 will be taken into consideration but must be in line with recent Le Mans GT1 manufacturers.

1st ASERS event of 2007
April 21,22 in Carbondale,IL.
A quote from the organizers on prizes and local rules. I'd love to come out but I'll be in Hawaii *cough*cough*.... working.
Please post any questions for the event here such as:
How long is the race? 4 Hours?? An address to the track?? Race fees?? Can I sign up online?
We have secured Skip Barber Classes for event winners on both Sat and Sun. We will be adding a local class for 4 cell 19t GTP cars with a set body list and 200 MM width restriction as well as 4 cell GT1 with your body list.
